With PHOBIA, which confronts anxiety and fear through catharsis and breathtaking melodies, the fruits of BURNLEY’s conviction can first be heard on “The Diary of Jane” –the first single and video–just one in a number of ferocious and hook-injected offerings on the band’s third album. Reggie and the Full Effect leader James Dewees must have had a particularly unhappy stay in New York City, especially in Brooklyn. The songs on the atypically introspective and somber LAST STOP: CRAPPY TOWN are named after various subway stops/lines in the metropolis, with each recalling their respective memories or feelings. Songs such as "F" and "L" drape the subway platforms in a red metalcore haze, straight from Dewees's old band, Coalesce, while "Lorimer Street" is a late night piano lament perfect for that long, lonesome wait for a train that's never coming.

Abandoning his former band's jokey pop-punk for a sound made up of equal parts post-punk grandeur and new wave shimmer, Blink-182's Tom Delonge started Angels and Airwaves with the mission to make music that was as big and important as U2 or Echo and the Bunnymen. He's one step closer with the impressive new I-EMPIRE.

Opener "Call to Arms" is just that: a huge, arena-filling mission statement that combines airy, dissonant guitars with an upright, marching back beat. Delonge's voice, once a weak link, has grown more confident and less adolescent. He's able to handle sun-dappled ballads like "Breathe" as easily as harder-rocking stuff like "Secret Crowds." "Rite of Spring" reminisces about a childhood saved by joining a band, revealing a tender side that Delonge rarely indulged during Blink's tenure at the top of the punk-pop heap. The freedom of a new project resonates throughout the album, with Delonge and his bandmates reaching far outside of their box to make music that they hope will really matter for people. It's an admirable goal, and the band seems up to the challenge.

After gaining the attention of the ever-growing emo-rock crowd in the late-1990s with their first two fiery indie-rock albums, Kansas City quintet the Get Up Kids abruptly turned on their heels with ON A WIRE, a record packed with bouncy, multi-layered, and provocative tunes. Taking yet another step along the line from emo icons to pop artisans, the group next unveiled the wonderfully crafted GUILT SHOW, an intelligent, full-bodied, and hook-laden record.

GUILT SHOW's opening track, "Man of Conviction," embodies their transformation, starting with the time-honored indie-punk sound and fury, but throwing in a dizzy piano and some odd jazz deconstructions before collapsing into the ultra-tuneful "The One You Want." On "Holy Roman," the Kids wax political using just the right pop know-how combined with an oblique edge. A jaunty piano riff opens "In Your Sea," descending into an appealing 1970s-ish bounce, and then into a subtle orchestral finale. An unpredictable yet immensely appealing pop ride, GUILT SHOW reveals the Get Up Kids to be a constantly maturing and always-intriguing rock outfit.

About Billy Tallent

Specializing in pop punk that is closely associated with teenagers, it is only fitting that Billy Talent originally came together during a high school talent contest, in their home-town of Streetsville, Ontario, Canada. After the show, members of several different bands that played that night decided to unite and form their own outfit, including Benjamin Kowalewicz (vocals), Ian D'Sa (guitar), Jon Gallant (bass), and Aaron Solowoniuk (drums). First going by the name Pez (a brand name of a children's confection), the quartet issued their debut, Watoosh, in 1998. Eventually, the band decided to change their name before continuing, and took the new moniker, Billy Talent, from a character in one of their favourite movies, Hard Core Logo. The name change was then followed by the release of a four-song EP, Try Honesty, which led to a publishing deal with EMI Records. Gigs opening for renowned bands such as Goldfinger and Sparta soon followed, as well as an appearance on the package tour MTV Campus Invasion and a one-off performance on Moby's Area: 2 travelling festival. It did not take long for the major labels to take an interest, and after several more demos were recorded, Billy Talent signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records. The quartet focused on recording their major label debut, Billy Talent, and the Gavin Brown-produced set was issued in late 2003. Unlike fellow pop punk contemporaries obsessed with partying and toilet humour, several tracks on the album showed Billy Talent digging a bit deeper lyrically, as evidenced by tracks such as "Standing In The Rain" (which explores the memories of a heroin addicted prostitute) and "How It Goes" (told from the perspective of someone living with Multiple Sclerosis).
